Breakaway Course

This Breakaway Training course teaches just a few effective techniques that are simple to use, and as safe as possible for both “you” and the “client” The techniques are easy to learn and (in many cases) can be used in a variety of different situations.

Although this course is intended for anyone who may face physical aggression from clients or service users it also recognises that many grabs hair pulls or holds are from service users who may just want your attention rather than to hurt you. This course is most suited for and delivered by people who are NOT COMBAT TRAINED!

What are the Benefits?

Personal Safety

This type of training is suitable for all people, although it’s particularly useful if you’re at risk of being physically assaulted while at work. It’s also ideal for people who work alone too.

Personal Confidence

This course provides you with the exceptional skills and confidence needed to professionally disengage from low level physical assaults including: arm grabs, wrist grabs, front and rear clothing grab, front and rear hair pulling, front and rear strangle, and biting.

Entry Requirements

English Proficiency:

  • To ensure the greatest opportunity for successful participation in our programmes, learners are required to have a good command of English in terms of reading, writing and speaking. This standard of proficiency is indicated by achieving or exceeding the standard of CEFR B2+Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) or standard of 6.0 on the IELTS.
  • Learners who have achieved a passing grade at Junior Certificate level will be deemed to meet this criterion. However, learners for whom English is not their first language, are required to advise Carraig Safety Consultants, and may be required to provide evidence of proficiency. This could include completing a standardised CEFR test or equivalent.
Course Content

What is covered on our Breakaway Training Course

  • Personal Safety & The Law – delegates will be able to understand the Law in relation to the use of force for personal Defence and / or the Defence of others.
  • Dynamic Risk Assessment – delegates will be able to use their observational and listening skills to rapidly identify the relative dangerousness of any given situation.
  • The importance of non-verbal communication including promotion of personal space.
  • The basic breakaway strategy – the simplest thing you can do to breakaway from an assault?
  • The importance of the spoken word.
  • De-escalation Strategies – delegates will share best practice in being able to use verbal and non-verbal communication skills to defuse anger or distress.
  • Identifying the types of common assaults staff could experience and whether this is an act of:
    • Communication
    • Warning
    • Attack
  • Common assaults and breakaway methods: – Hand shake, cuddle, inappropriate touch, hand grab; wrist grab; collar grab; grab from behind; front bear hug; rear bear hug; hair grab; other grabs; front strangle; rear strangle; biting; scratching etc.
  • Demonstration Practice Observation and Review of breakaway disengagements.
  • The importance of reporting all incidents of aggression and violence.

Carraig Safety are qualified instructors through the National Network of Training Consultants, giving delegates a nationally recognised qualification and the assurance of the quality of tuition and materials.

Max participants: We have a maximum number of delegates of 10 per Instructor and a minimum of 2 instructors on each course.

  • Breakaway training is designed for individuals who may find themselves in situations where they need to manage physical confrontations or safely disengage from potentially volatile encounters.

What do I need to bring?

We supply all course materials.

Should I be nervous?

We realise that many staff attending a breakaway course are very apprehensive as they are not sure what to expect. This introduction aims to put your minds at rest.

Is the course very physical?

You are not there to throw each other around. It is about learning techniques to escape safely from an aggressor when all else has failed, to give you the confidence to be able to escape without injury to yourselves or the assailant, and to get help.

Do I need experience to attend?

No experience is necessary, full training will be given.

You will find the course is designed not only to be informative, but also fun. It does not require strength or the need to be especially fit. Staff of all ages and abilities can participate, although we will want you to tell us if you have any medical conditions, which might limit your participation.

What Certification will I receive?

You will receive a Carraig Safety Certificate in Breakaway training through the National Network of Training Consultants
